With a view to synchronize science education in India with global standards, various premier institutions as well as universities in the country have launched different courses for those who aspire to have higher knowledge in science. Several institutions across the country offer BS courses, BS/MS dual degree courses and integrated M. Sc courses.
IISc, B’lore: Offers four year BS courses in Mathematics, Materials, Environmental Science, Chemistry and Biology. The novelty of this program lies in its interdisciplinary approach, stronger flavor of engineering, appreciable exposure to disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, and a year-long research project. Options to select elective courses from other disciplines, makes the course an interdisciplinary one.
IIT Kanpur: Offers B. Sc in Physics, Mathematics and Scientific Computing.
IIT-M: Offers five year BS/MS dual degree course in Physics.
IIT-Kghargpur: Offers five year integrated course in Physics.
IIT-Bombay: Offers B. Tech in Engineering Physics and B. Tech /M. Tech dual degree program in Engineering Physics with nano-science specialization. IIT-B was the first institution in the country to offer B. Tech in Engineering Physics.
Other IITs namely, Delhi, Guwahathi, and Madras also offer B. Tech in Engineering Physics.
Selection for the courses will be based on the rank in JEE (Main and Advanced).
IISER (Thiruvananthapuram, Kolkota, Mohali, Pune, Bhopal): Offer BS and BS-MS courses in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. In the first year, all students are introduced to these four basic sciences and Earth Sciences. In the second year, the students can choose any three of the pre-major subjects from these disciplines mentioned above. In the third and fourth years, students select a major subject from the above disciplines and need to take optional interdisciplinary courses.
The fifth year is devoted to full time research/technical project/specialized training in which the students need to prepare a dissertation. At the end of the fifth year B.S – M.S dual degree is awarded to successful candidates. Students joining IISER will receive inspire fellowship of INR 5000 per month.
Admission to IISER programs are carried out in three streams namely Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) Basic Science Stream, Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) and from State and Central Boards. In addition to them, those who are found eligible for INSPIRE scholarship by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) on the basis of their aggregate scores in class XII, may also be considered for admission to IISER, provided that they clear an aptitude test.
NISER, Bhubaneswar (National Institute of Science Education and Research)
NISER (under DAE) offers a 5-year integrated M. Sc. Program in basic sciences after 10+2 years of schooling (or equivalent). Currently the institute has four major schools viz. Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology. Students are awarded a Master of Science degree in one of the four subjects, after they successfully complete the academic requirements.
Integrated Science and Education and Research Centre under Visva Bharati, Santiniketan offers five year integrated M. Sc Physics course.
University of Mumbai (UM) – Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CBS) Mumbai: Offer five year integrated M. Sc course in Physical, Chemical, Mathematical and Biological Sciences.
Admission to the Five-Year Integrated M Sc Programs at NISER, Visva Bharati and University of Mumbai (UM) – Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CBS) will be based on the Merit List of National Eligibility Screening Test (NEST).
IIST, Thiruvanathapuram: Offers B. Tech in Physical Science. Students may choose electives from, Astronomy, remote sensing, atmospheric sciences and earth sciences. Students scoring above 7.5 CGPA will be eligible to be absorbed into ISRO as Scientist/Engineer.
BITS: Offers M. Sc (Hons.) courses in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Biology. Admission is done through BITSAT.
Universities that offer integrated M. Sc. courses
University of Hyderabad: Offers integrated M. Sc Physics course.
Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT): Offers integrated M. Sc in Photonics.
University of Pondichery: Offers five year integrated M. Sc in Physics, Mathematics, Geology and Chemistry. Admission is through admission test conducted by the University.
